Stick to bottled (Bonafont, Ciel, Epura) or filtered. Ice at reputable restaurants is fine, made from purified water. Brushing teeth from the tap is generally OK for short stays. Outside the city: bottled only.
"Spicy" here means real chile heat. Always taste a tiny drop of any unfamiliar salsa before applying. Useful: "¿Pica?" (is it spicy?), "no muy picante, por favor" (not too spicy), "sin chile" (without chile).
"Soy vegetariano/a" (I'm vegetarian). "No como carne, ni pollo, ni pescado" (no meat, chicken, or fish). "¿Está hecho con manteca de cerdo?" (is it made with lard?). Important since beans, tamales, rice often are.
